2-D art
Brief: Dreams and Nightmares

Ideas presented and discussed to gain feedback

Final Piece and evaluation (picture is upside down!)

EVALUATION (Written at home due to lockdown)

The topic I had decided to do was the dreams and nightmares one. I had chosen this one because a lot of my interests revolve around dreams and nightmare so this would be the right choice for me.
So to start, I looked at some examples of this genre and stuck them in my sketchbook to write about what my thoughts were about the artwork, elements used etc.

Firstly I was going to do a night sky city scape themed piece. The reason for this as my theme was going to be about sleep paralysis and the idea was to make the person aware that it's nighttime and you'd assume people are sleeping. It would then include a sleep deprived person on the bottom of the page making the person who's looking at the artwork see that people are suffering from this condition. I sketched out two similar pieces in my sketchbook, mostly to experiment with various materials and try out different techniques. I first used black wax crayon for my silhouette of the city scape. I didn't like this because the crayon would leave bits scattered around the page and the bits would mark the work. In my second experiment, I used sharpie and this was a better result, giving the city scape a sharp effect that stood out. I had also experimented with watercolour paint and oil pastels.

A lot of people liked my ideas and in the end, I decided to do something completely different. I had decided to do a crescent moon with vampire fangs backed onto a night sky with stars. The reason for the vampire fangs was because they were a metaphor for sucking away sleep. I did plan this in my sketchbook, i.e drew my design and experimented with materials. My inspiration for this was the Killstar moon that has a skeleton's face.

Some techniques included shading with the pencil and blending with watercolour paint. Also some materials included acrylic paint for my night sky and stars. The colours were black and white. Some tools included a paintbrush for the paint, a water pot, a paper trimmer to get my paper to the desired size and a pencil for sketching. I always worked safely by keeping my workspace tidy and clearing away everything after I had used it. I didn't have the water need anything electrical.

I have finished my artwork and I would say I am very happy with the result.

It was a fairly easy idea because stuff like this is very easy to think of as this theme is kind of the norm for me.

I have no improvements to make, however, I could expand this design onto smaller pictures (postcard size), tote bags and clothing maybe. Or I could make more skeletal pieces such as the sun and other celestial related things.
